Brandon Waddell’s first major league appearance in almost four years was a rousing success. After spending 2 1/2 seasons overseas, the left-hander was called up by the New York Mets from Triple-A Syracuse and pitched 4 1/3 shutout innings against Arizona in relief of opener Huascar Brazobán.

The Mets are extending their injured list, adding to the challenges in their MLB roster. On Monday, they announced that Jesse Winker will be sidelined for 6-8 weeks; a tough blow for the team, which recently also lost two left-handed pitchers for the rest of the season.

Jesse Winker is likely headed to the injured list with an oblique issue and his absence could provide an opportunity for Starling Marte to play every day.
