Tottenham have bolstered their midfield ahead of a return to the Champions League by signing Portugal international João Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich with an option to make the move permanent.

The deal includes an option to make the transfer permanent for €30million (£25.9m, $34.2m) at the end of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has suffered a “bad knee injury” according to new head coach Thomas Frank. Maddison came off the bench in the second half of Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle United at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in South Korea on Sunday.
