Following hours of heavy rain, students and staff at Westernport Elementary School in western Maryland were rescued from the school after flash flooding forced them to the second and third floors.

Flooding in rural western Maryland forced the evacuation of an elementary school Tuesday afternoon as water began to breach the second floor, according to local officials. Homes and businesses in downtown Westernport were also inundated with floodwaters after hours of heavy rain.

Flooding was reported in several states, including Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, from a massive storm system.
