The largely conservative province may hold a referendum on separating from the nation in 2026, according to its premier.

The premier of Alberta says she will hold a referendum next year on the energy rich province separating from Canada if citizens gather the required number of signatures on a petition.

The premier announced the “Alberta Next” panel Monday in an 18-minute speech in which she listed a range of complaints, including cancellation of pipelines, taxes on carbon and methane emissions and federal laws that make environmental assessments for energy projects stricter.
