The Leo will be available throughout the month of May, which just so happens to be Italian Beef Month. (Extra cause for meaty celebration!) Portillo's also declares that the "heavenly creation" will channel "the passion, flavor, and pride that Chicagoans are known for — right down to the last juicy bite."

Portillo’s is celebrating the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope and a Chicago native, with a limited-time sandwich called "The Leo." The Italian beef sandwich, available through May, is dipped in gravy and topped with sweet or hot peppers.

"In the name of the gravy, the bun, and hot giard, we introduce The Leo," Portillo's announced Friday. The sandwich comes hours after Cardinal Robert Prevost, a Chicago area native, was elected as the next leader of the Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.
