India imports around two million barrels of crude oil per day from Russia, making it the second largest purchaser of Russian oil after China, according to the New York Times. Russia’s share of Indian oil imports has increased from less than 1% before the war to more than a third.

India hasn’t given the country’s oil refiners instructions to stop buying Russian oil, according to people familiar, days after US President Donald Trump blasted New Delhi for the energy purchases.

Trump threatened 100% tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil unless Moscow reaches a major peace deal with Ukraine. Russia is the top supplier to India.
