There has been a rush to secure Real IDs before the May 7 deadline at numerous locations around the country. NBC News correspondent Maggie Vespa visited one in Chicago on TODAY where the line stretched for four hours. One man told her he tried to pay someone to cut the line.

REAL ID won't be required for these five states, but travelers will need something else

Additionally, five states issue an Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) and Enhanced ID (EID), which the Department of Homeland Security accepts as REAL ID alternatives. Not every license or ID in these states is enhanced by default. Residents can choose between a standard license/ID or EDL/EID during their application process.
