PALMER, Alaska — It is one of Alaska’s favorite Mother’s Day traditions, getting up close and personal with animals that have survived the ice age.

The recent escalation followed a gun massacre of tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir and is the most serious military confrontation between them in decades.
